Brimscombe Mill

This project involved curatorial and architectural input for the transformation of an 18th-century mill building in Stroud, originally part of the town’s historic inland port. Previously disused, the building has been re-purposed by The Grace Network charity as part of a wider complex of industrial structures adapted for community uses.

Working in collaboration with curator Saffron Knight, we advised on the treatment of the internal fabric—focusing on glazing replacement, finishes, and spatial reconfiguration—to convert a derelict interior into a flexible venue for exhibitions, workshops, and other community-facing activities. The strategy balanced sensitive conservation with practical upgrades, ensuring the historic character of the building was preserved while providing a robust and adaptable setting for cultural events.

The opening public art exhibition and workshop series, held between 29 June and 1 July 2023, marked the launch of this newly revitalised venue and the beginning of a wider programme of arts and cultural activity. Delivered in partnership with Stroud District Council and local stakeholders, the project highlights the value of cultural collaboration in sustaining historic buildings for community use. The outcome is a vibrant arts and exhibition space that safeguards its architectural heritage while re-establishing its role at the heart of Stroud’s creative community.
