Pegasus Art Shop

We were appointed by Pegasus Art Shop to oversee the conversion of part of Griffin Mill into new artist studios and workshop spaces, supporting the ongoing adaptation of this historically significant site. The works focused on the reconfiguration of an existing loft and upper floors, improving circulation through the insertion of a bespoke secondary stair that better connected the retail space below with the roofspace above.

Stripping back areas previously used as storage revealed a frame of original timber beams, layered with old posters and tar from earlier uses—traces of the building’s long industrial history. These elements were carefully retained and celebrated, with new interventions expressed as distinct yet sympathetic to the existing structure.

Griffin Mill comprises three substantial late-19th-century brick buildings, forming part of a wider complex first recorded in 1599 that originally housed textile manufacturing and a saw mill. Today, alongside Pegasus Art Shop, the site accommodates a range of workshops, retail spaces, and light industrial units, contributing to the wider network of historic mills across the Stroud Valleys.

The project balanced the technical demands of adaptation with the sensitivities of working within a listed industrial heritage context. The outcome is a modest but transformative reconfiguration that extends the life and functionality of the mill, enabling new forms of making and cultural activity to thrive within its historic fabric.
