Retain Memorise Thrive

Retain–Memorise–Thrive is a research project examining development trends in London, with a focus on the impact of generic, duplicative schemes on the character and individuality of their surroundings. The study identified a trend toward consolidation of single buildings into larger blocks, resulting in the loss of vernacular heritage, local distinctiveness, and a sense of place.

The research advocates for site-specific regeneration and conservation, encouraging interventions that respond thoughtfully to context and stimulate more porous, hierarchical, and characterful urban environments. Emphasis is placed on the use of enduring materials, sympathetic to the local vernacular, fostering familiarity and memory within increasingly globalised and homogenous cityscapes.

Key themes explored include the building envelope, internal programme, and integration with the surrounding urban fabric, offering insights into the interplay between public and private realms across central London. A series of collages, created alongside a wider body of research, visually interpret these investigations and propose ways in which architecture can retain memory, identity, and richness in the city.
