Swells Hill
A recently completed topographic and landscaping scheme saw the creation of an off-road parking area for a private residence in Stroud, Gloucestershire. The works included modifications to the existing terracing of the garden, balancing contemporary requirements for access with the sensitive management of the historic landscape.
The house itself has a layered history, originally dating back to the 17th century with significant additions in the 19th century. At one stage it is thought to have operated as a woollen stocking mill, likely linked to the woollen mills of the Golden Valley, embedding the property in the area’s industrial heritage.
Situated within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Rodborough Common Special Area of Conservation, the project required careful consideration of both ecological and heritage sensitivities. Planning and Listed Building Consent approval were secured in consultation with Stroud District Council and supported by the input of a structural engineer.
The project demonstrates Assorted Studio’s ongoing interest in topographic design, landscape interventions, and the integration of contemporary needs within historically and environmentally sensitive contexts.
